Summer Anime Picks

We are just 3 weeks into the Summer Anime season, and I finally have my watch list! I was just at Anime Expo and It’s a great way to see what’s in store for the summer season. I already started watching some of these and I caught some premieres at Anime Expo. It’s looking great so far, I’m looking forward to this season!

GACHIAKUTA

On Crunchyroll

Ads this show were everywhere at Anime Expo and I couldn’t escape it. I knew nothing about this show prior and seeing it everywhere caught my interested. I did a “dumptser dive” at the Crunchyroll booth and I got some cool merch. This show seems to be highly anticipated so I decided to join the hype and watch the first episode. Looks interesting so far, I love a good revenge story.

Synopsis (Kodansha)

A boy lives in a floating town, where the poor scrape by and the rich live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. When he’s falsely accused of murder, though, his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash. Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and to travel the path to vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, a boy will have to become a warrior…

The Summer Hikaru Died

On Netflix

When I hear about a new horror anime, with a touch of mystery and BL, I am already sold. I have heard of the manga for a while now and I have been wanting to read it. Now I can finally see what the show is all about. I watched the first two episodes already, and it’s already very creep and unsettling… love it! Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Synopsis (Yen Press)

Two boys lived in a village: Yoshiki and Hikaru. The two did everything together…until the day Hikaru was encompassed by a mysterious light. That was when everything changed—Hikaru most of all. Yoshiki still wishes from the bottom of his heart to always stay by his side…but is there even a Hikaru left to be with?

Leviathan

On Netflix

I have heard of this show a year ago when I attended a Qubic and Studio Orange panel(Beastars, Trigun Stampede). This is based on the Novel by Scott Westerfeld, I read other books by him growing up and it’s interesting to see this be adapted into an Anime! The story has an interesting premise, it takes place in alternate history during World War 1 which feature mechas and huge genetically modified creatures made for war. It fitting for studio Orange, known for 3d CGI, to be animating it! The story is in the Deiselpunk genre, which is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction similar to steampunk or cyberpunk that combines the aesthetics of the diesel-based technology. I caught the premiere of the first anime at AX and enjoyed it. All the episodes are out already and I’m looking forward to see the rest on Netflix!

Synopsis (Netflix)

On the brink of war in 1914, a fugitive prince and a girl in disguise change the course of history.

Dan Da Dan Season 2

On Crunchyroll

I love Dan Da Dan! I loved the first season but it was way too short, I’m glad we didn’t have to wait too long for it’s return. They released the first three episodes in theaters in June and it was straight action. I was amazing to see it in theaters I felt fully immersed in the story. The animation and music is fantastic, we also got to see an interview post credits with the composer! I have not read the manga but I know this arc is going to be great.

Synopsis (Viz Media)

Momo Ayase and Okarun are on opposite sides of the paranormal spectrum regarding what they’ll believe in and what they won’t. Their quest to prove each other wrong leads them down a path of secret crushes and paranormal battles they’ll have to participate in to believe!

I will also be watching:
