AWA 2024: Josei Deserves Better Panel Review

In this panel, the host explained Josei and the difference between it and Shojo, emphasizing what all Josei fans feel—it deserves so much better. So you may be asking, what’s the difference?

Manga/Anime marketed focusing on women from ages 18+

This typically includes themes of marriage/relationships, fantasy, and sexual themes. Most titles are rarely adapted into English or receive no animation.

It was a very interactive panel, with great banter from the crowd and the host. She gave us her real opinions about certain shows – whether she loved or hated them. She also informed us of topics that are typically assumed to be josei, but are actually seinen or shojo! Some of these titles were genuinely shocking to hear. Does that mean they aren’t amazing shows? Absolutely not! But if you’re like me, you like knowing the proper categorization of things like that.

There were some shows/reads that were already on my radar, but I haven’t gotten the chance to get around to them.

  • Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan
  • Millennium Actress
  • Helter Skelter
  • Midnight Secretary
  • Paradise Kiss
  • In Clothes Called Fat

It was a delight seeing people’s minds be blown by her “hot takes” and different categorizations of some of our favorite shows and reads. It was a community effort and lots of shows/reads were shared amongst the crowd. This was 100% an amazing interactive panel experience and I hope to see and be a part of more in the future!

Again, thanks to AWA for the opportunity to be press at the con!
