Happy Fall! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer of anime! I watched great anime this past summer including My Happy Marriage, Dark Gathering, and ZOM 100, but it will be sad to see them go. Jujutsu Kaisen however will be continuing and many of my favorites will be returning in the Fall including Dr. Stone and Spy Family! Since there are so many anime that catch my eye this season, I will only highlight new ones. I don’t know how I will be able to watch all of these as a medical student, but anime keeps me sane during my studies so here you go:
The Apothecary Diaries
Airs October 21st on Crunchyroll
I’m very excited for this anime because I started reading the manga and immediately loved it. Not only is the art very beautiful and the stories intriguing, it also discusses medical topics! Since I’m a nerd, I enjoy how this anime goes in depth on certain poisons and how to cure them. I hope all the science nerds check this one out!
Synopsis (J-Novel Club)
In the East is a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and serving women live in a sprawling complex known as the hougong, the rear palace. Maomao, an unassuming girl raised in an unassuming town by her apothecary father, never imagined the rear palace would have anything to do with her—until she was kidnapped and sold into service there.
Undead Unluck
Airs on October 6th on Hulu
I first heard about this anime when I attended Anime Expo this past summer, and it was being advertised everywhere. I didn’t get to see the premiere but I’m still interested because it has a girl lead, and because it has to do with her unluckiness. This concept of the anime is so weird, I have got to check this out.
Synopsis (VIZ Media)
What happens when an unlucky girl meets an undead guy? Pure chaos! Tired of inadvertently killing people with her special ability Unluck, Fuuko Izumo sets out to end it all. But when she meets Andy, a man who longs for death but can’t die, she finds a reason to live—and he finds someone capable of giving him the death he’s been longing for. All Fuuko wants is a whirlwind romance like the one in her favorite shojo manga. Unfortunately, her Unluck ability makes that impossible. But just as Fuuko hits rock bottom, Andy sweeps her off her feet—literally! Now she’s become Andy’s unwilling test subject as he works to find a way to trigger a stroke of Unluck big enough to kill him for good. However, when the pair discovers a secret organization is hunting them, it puts Andy’s burial plans on hold.
Castlevania: Nocturne
Airs on September 28th on Netflix
If you didn’t know already, ReligiouslyNerdy are huge Castlevania fans! This is not a continuation of the original Castlevania anime however, but it is a sequel happening years later in the same world. Knowing that I LOVE Castlevania, this is definitely number 1 on my list. After watching the trailer, I loved seeing a diverse set of characters with different magic abilities, and the amazing animation. Stay tuned for a podcast review coming soon!
Synopsis (Netflix)
As revolution sweeps France, Richter Belmont fights to uphold his family’s legacy and prevent the rise of a ruthless, power-hungry vampire ruler.
A Girl & Her Guard Dog
Airs September 28th on Crunchyroll
You will only see premises like these in anime, so this is why I have to watch this. I also like stories involving yakuza as well for some reason, so that’s another reason. Let’s see how this goes lol.
Synopsis (Kodansha)
Isaku never asked to be the daughter of a yakuza boss, but when her parents died in a car accident when she was 5, her gangster grandfather took her in and raised her as part of the clan. After years of being avoided by her schoolmates because of her family ties, Isaku is finally ready to make her high-school debut, live a normal life, and maybe even find love…until loyal family servant and Isaku’s dedicated guardian, 26-year-old Keiya, enters high school right alongside her and vows to protect her from all of the above! Now she’s got a chain-smoking, pistol-wielding knight-in-shining(?)-armor to deal with, and navigating high school besides? What’s a young lady to do?!
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
Airs November 17th on Netflix
I enjoyed the live action movie and I love to hear that the original cast is back for this anime! I also enjoy the trailer, the music and animation looks great. I can’t wait to see this!
Synopsis (Netflix)
Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley.
The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch
Airs on October 1st on Crunchyroll
This anime caught my eye first because I saw a black character (we rarely see them), but the trailer really got me. The trailer was HILARIOUS and full of witch shenanigans. This is also a great time to watch during the spooky season. I can’t wait for some comedy!
Synopsis:
Alyssa, a witch who lives alone in the woods, finds a human baby one day. Despite her bewilderment, she names the child Viola and decides to raise her. 16 years later, Viola has grown far more than Alyssa ever imagined… Wait, she grew too much! And so, the chaotic comedy of a mother and daughter with inverted appearances begins!!
