Summer Anime Picks

Hi everyone! Summer is here and these are my picks!

New Series / Reboots

Tokyo Mew Mew New

Air Date: July 6th

Y’all, Tokyo Mew Mew was one of my first animes! I remember watching it as Mew Mew Power on 4kids! and I revisited the anime in Middle School. This was when I learned that it had a second season and I watch subbed anime for the first time! Now this summer there will be a reboot following the manga. I haven’t read the manga so I’m wondering how different it will be to the first anime. I hope it just improves the story. Looking forward to all the nostalgia!

Synopsis (Anime Planet)

Momomiya Ichigo was just trying to enjoy a date with the boy she liked, Aoyama Masaya.  Instead, she ended up conscripted into a struggle against aliens intent on wiping humanity from the earth!  The Mew Project has infused five young girls with the DNA of endangered creatures, and given them special powers to fight chimera anima, earth animals transformed into monsters by alien parasites. Somehow, Ichigo has to get her teammates to work together, battle chimera anima, and fend off the attacks (and advances?) of the aliens themselves. And that’s in addition to keeping her identity secret and improving her relationship with Masaya. Not to mention, just who is that mysterious Blue Knight anyway?

RWBY: Ice Queendom

Air Date: Episodes 1 – 3 on June 24th, Official Release July 3rd

Where To Watch: Crunchyroll, YouTube

I’m a huge RWBY fan; I love the story, characters, fights scenes and ESPECIALLY the soundtracks. While still waiting for a Volume 9 announcement, we hear about RWBY: Ice Queendom, a new RWBY retelling/side story (not sure how to describe it) animated in Japan. I’m curious how this will go; the trailer looks fine but I don’t know how I feel about the 2d animation. The original show had some issues with story telling (which resulted in World of Remnant minisodes) so a retelling may fix some things. The same voice actors for the original (Japanese and English) will reprise their roles but it seems like there will be a new soundtrack (which I’m not too excited about). I’m still a huge RWBY fan so I’ll definitely check this out, and I hope its successful! Ep 4 will be premiering at Anime Expo on July 3rd, which I plan to attend in Ruby cosplay!

Synopsis (Rooster Teeth)

RWBY imagines a world filled with horrific monsters bent on death and destruction, and humanity’s only hope is dependent upon powerful Huntsmen and Huntresses. Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long are four such Huntresses in training whose journeys will take them far past the grounds of their school, Beacon Academy. Though each may be powerful on their own, these four girls must overcome dark forces and work as a team if they truly hope to become the next generation of Remnant’s protectors.

Shine On! Bakumatsu Bad Boys!

Airdate: July 8th

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

After seeing the trailer and reading the synopsis, I was instantly intrigued. I like historical stories with an added twist. Seven prisoners have to replace members of the Shinsengumi; which gives me some suicide squad vibes. It also sounds like a good revenge and mystery story. The art style also looks great, The author of Shaman King Manga worked on character designs.

Synopsis (ANN)

Set in the era when samurai rule Japan. However, the Shinsengumi police force has been all but wiped out by an unknown foe, save one survivor. Seven criminals have been chosen as substitutes for the Shinsengumi. To ensure law and order in Kyoto, a top-secret replacement operation is set in motion.

Returning Series

Made in Abyss Season 2

Airdate: July 6th

Where to watch: HIDIVE

I haven’t watched season 1 of this anime yet, but it has been on my list for a while and I needed the push to start. I hear this show is very dark and depressing and it involves kids. It gets compared with The Promised Neverland and To Your Eternity. These are anime I have watched an very much enjoyed (ignoring The Promised Neverland Season 2). Not sure why I like to get emotionally damaged but I’m looking forward to it another sad adventure. Season 2 will also be premier in Anime Expo and I plan to attend!

Synopsis (Anime Planet)

Young Riko has spent her entire childhood dreaming of exploring the Abyss, an enormous pit and series of caves filled with wonders and terrors that only the staunchest Cave Raiders have survived to bring back ancient artifacts from its depths. No one knows just how deep the pit is, but Riko’s own mother disappeared into it years ago, leaving her daughter behind with a powerful urge to follow after her and learn the Abyss’s mysteries for herself. One day Riko discovers a boy who seems to have originated from the Abyss and appears to be a sort of robot. Can he aid the little girl in her quest to find her missing mother? Or will the children become the Abyss’s next victims?

That’s my list! What anime are you looking forward to this summer?
